Brazil acts to combat corruption

Following years of intense international pressure, Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, finally, sent to Congress a bill aiming to crack down on companies that bribe public officials. Under the proposal a company caught bribing domestic or foreign public officials could even be shut down. The bill would also prevent individuals convicted of fraud from founding a new company and be able to again bid for government contracts. It has been welcomed, but approval in Congress is uncertain. A recent poll by the National Transportation Confederation (CNT) and the Sensus Institute has found that corruption is one of the things Brazilians are most concerned about.
